Join Us

The u3a was founded in 1982, and is a UK-wide collection of locally-run interest groups that provide members a wide range of opportunities to come together to learn for fun. People enjoy exploring new ideas, skills and activities together. There are over 1000 plus u3as in the UK with over 400,000 members; Wessington u3a membership costs on average less than £20 per year and is open to everyone who is no longer in full-time work.

Wessington u3a Membership

If you are no longer in full time work, and you would like to join, then please contact our Membership Secretary by clicking on this link Edith Wardlaw for more information. There is no waiting list for membership, you can join straight away.

Not sure if you want to join? You may attend a maximum of 4 activities such as our Monthly meeting, Interest Groups and other events or meetings as a guest, for free.

An Annual Subscription is payable each year commencing in April. There is a reduced rate for persons joining after September.

As we meet in North Biddick Social Club we also have to become members of that club. Annual Subscription is initially £3, and then £2 per year thereafter. This gives full membership of the North Biddick Social Club. Please pay this fee to Peter Welsh in January each year.

Monthly Meetings

There is a regular monthly meeting. See the Events and Speakers page for more details.

Please come along to one of our monthly meetings at North Biddick Social Club and find more information about activities and events at Wessington u3a. Meetings are generally held the third Monday of the month.

Interest Groups

Although a high proportion of our members attend the Monthly Meetings, members can also enjoy their membership by joining one or more of our Interest Groups. These groups are formed and run by Wessington u3a members themselves. Contact the specific Group Co-ordinator (details on the Groups page) to find out about joining a group. Some groups have to limit numbers for various reasons and some groups have a waiting list.

National and Regional u3a Organisations

Wessington is part of the National u3a movement across the UK, each affiliated to the Third Age Trust. u3as are self-help, self-managed, lifelong learning co-operatives for older people no longer in full time work. They provide opportunities for their members to share learning experiences in a wide range of interest groups and to pursue learning not for qualifications, but for fun.

Wessington u3a is part of the Northumberland Region u3a, which is part of the National organisation. Links to the National and Regional websites can be found on our Northumbria Region page.

Wessington operates within a Network of other local u3as. See the Network page for more information about this.
